Ethernet Management with KateLAN
KateLAN Interface Selection (screenshot)
KateLAN is a utility for setting up your ethernet in the exact same manner as netconfig, but with a friendly point and click interface in GTK2. To launch KateLAN, execute the command `katelan` or select it from the System application menu.
Note: On The LiveCD the root password is "kate"
All configurable interfaces detected will be listed in the Interface drop down. You may select from three options for each device. Static IP to define the IP and related options, DHCP to have them set from your network services, or None to disable the interface.

Help Tips
Mousing over the help icons next to each option will provide the following help in the main text area of the application.
[edit]
Basic Options
- Hostname: This is the friendly name your PC will be known by on the network. This is also the name you will see on the login prompt. You should do a full logout and login after changing your PC hostname. This field is required.
- Domain: This is the name of a group of computers on your network. If you do not have a domain setup you may enter anything as this will not effect the use of the network. This field is required.
[edit]
Static IP Options
- IP Address: This is the unique address that identifies your PC on the network. An IP can only be used by one PC at a time, so you must choose one not in use and within your network range. This field is required.
- Netmask: The netmask defines a range of addresses in your networks logical space. This usually takes the form of 255.255.255.0 depending on the IP class you use. This field is required.
- Gateway: The default gateway is the server your PC will go to when it searches for a connection to the internet. This field is optional, but important.
- Nameserver: The nameserver is the IP of a server to resolve DNS into routable addresses. This field is optional, but important.
[edit]
DHCP Options
- DHCP Hostname: Some DHCP networks require a hostname given to you by administrator. If you have never been given a hostname then you may leave this blank. This field is optional.
